We are pleased to announce UBC Senate approved the Professor Madanlal T. Wasan Memorial Prize in Urologic Sciences.

A $2,000 prize has been made available annually through a gift from Dr. Kishor Wasan in memory of his father, Professor Madanlal T. Wasan (1930-2005), for an outstanding Ph.D. student whose supervisor is in the Department of Urologic Sciences. Professor Wasan (B.A., M.A., Ph.D.) was born in Sarai Saleh, Haripur District, Pakistan (then British India), and moved to Mumbai, India (then Bombay) in 1947, where he attended Siddharth College at the University of Bombay. During his undergraduate studies he was awarded a prestigious Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Scholarship in recognition of his mathematical abilities.

In 1956 he came to the United States to work on his Ph.D. in Statistics and Probability at the University of Illinois. He was a Professor of Statistics and Probability at Queen’s University for over forty years, where he established a statistics lab and wrote books that were published in the US, the UK, and the Soviet Union. This prize was established in recognition of Dr. Wasan’s commitment to championing international graduate students and trainees, and his legacy as a father, professor and mentor. The prize is made on the recommendation of the Department of Urologic Sciences. (First award available for the 2020/2021 winter session).
