Stone Centre

Kidney stone patients are managed by Drs. Ben Chew, Ryan Paterson, Chris Nguan, and Mark Nigro at Vancouver General Hospital; Drs. Joel Teichman and Brian Mayson at St Pauls Hospital; and Drs. Kiara Hennessey and Jennie Mickelson at Richmond General Hospital.

The Department has use of the extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) machine, holmium: YAG lasers, ultrasonic and pneumatic lithotripsy devices, minimally invasive flexible and semirigid ureteroscopes, and nephroscopes. At both VGH and SPH, metabolic prophylaxis against stones is integral to management of stone patients. Stone prevention is offered both by urologists and nephrologists at VGH and SPH.

Active research interests include ESWL, laser lithotripsy, emerging laser technologies and lithotripsy devices, ureteral stents compositions, infection and antibiotics, and preventative therapies under the direction of Drs. Paterson, Chew and Teichman. Dr. Dirk Lange manages the Stone Centre research labaratory. Current research work is being done in collaboration with other centres in Canada and the United States.
