Chairman’s Message

Chairman’s Message

The Department of Urologic Sciences (DUS), part of the UBC Faculty of Medicine, was founded on July 1, 2006. The DUS strives to develop and deliver programmes of excellence in key areas of urology. With a robust and active clinical faculty the DUS is a leader in education, clinical care and research.

The faculty is comprised of three 28 full time faculty: 10 full professors, 12 Associate Professors, 6 Assistant Professors including a UBC Distinguished University Professor, a BC Leadership Chair in prostate research (to support the research of Dr Martin Gleave), 16 PhD research scientists and 7 members who are actively, and successfully, pursuing careers as surgeon-scientists. The DUS is also closely affiliated with the Vancouver Prostate Centre (VPC) [LINK] and its research arm PC-TRiADD [LINK].

Our educational programs are strong and comprehensive. The 14 residents in the UBC urology program come from medical schools across the country and are able to work within the VPC, a funded National Cancer Institute of Canada training centre. DUS faculty also supervises Masters and PhD students from around the world. Our clinical work continues to be shared in noteworthy publications including the Journal of Urology and the American Journal of Surgical Pathology, and we work to stay on the cutting-edge of technology in research and clinical care.

I hope that this website provides relevant and helpful information. We will endeavour to keep it up-to-date and useful. And I know that I speak for the entire group when I say we look forward to continuing to support patients, educators, trainees and the public. Our clinical faculty members are proud to be a part of this team as we work with Osler’s dream in mind: “Clinical Faculty working in harmony as equals alongside their colleagues dedicated to research, each contributing ideas to the other’s task.”

Sincerely,

Martin Gleave, MD, FRCSC, FACS

British Columbia Leadership Chair

Distinguished Professor and Head, Department of Urologic Sciences, UBC
