On behalf of the Department of Urologic Sciences at the UBC, it is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of Dr. Lorne Sullivan, a distinguished figure in the field of Urologic Sciences and a highly respected member of our community. Lorne passed away today, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by those whose lives he touched.
Lorne was born and raised in Moss Bank, Saskatchewan. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan, Faculty of Medicine in 1962 and furthered his medical journey with an internship at Vanderbilt University. He completed his urological training at the University of British Columbia (UBC) under the guidance and mentorship of Dr. John Balfour. His thirst for knowledge led him to pursue postgraduate training in Urological Oncology as a Royal College Traveling Fellow at various esteemed US Cancer Centres.
In 1971, Dr. Sullivan established his practice in British Columbia. Over the years, he developed a highly acclaimed centre for the surgical management of urological cancer at UBC. His dedication to the field of urology was not limited to clinical practice; he was also a revered teacher and clinician, responsible for shaping and training an entire generation of British Columbia urologists. He played a pivotal role in recruiting the team of clinicians and scientists to support establishment of the Vancouver Prostate Centre, and help shape a culture of team science with growth of many specialized programs within the Department of Urologic Sciences.
On a national and international scale, Dr. Sullivan’s contributions were invaluable. He served as President of the Canadian Urological Association, the Northwest Urological Society, and the Western Section of the AUA. He chaired the Specialty Committee in Urology and held the esteemed position of Chief Examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. From 1991 to 1999, he served as the Head of the Division of Urology at UBC, further solidifying his reputation as a leader in the field.
Upon his retirement in 1999, Lorne chose to spend cherished moments with his family and grandchildren. Despite stepping back from active practice, he continued to be an integral part of our Department, gracing us with his presence at academic and social functions. Our annual research program, the Dr. Lorne Sullivan Research Day, will ensure we all remember his many contributions.
Lorne’s passing fills us with sadness, but we are comforted by his long life full of accomplishments, knowing he was appreciated by so many. His contributions, wisdom, and legacy will continue to inspire us all. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Elaine, his three children Jim, Kathleen, and John, six grandchildren, many friends and colleagues, as well as the countless individuals whose lives he enriched through his dedication, compassion, and expertise.
