Infertility

The DUS offers full evaluation for men who have difficulties conceiving. Dr. Nigro is an experienced urologist and was involved in the first pregnancy achieved from frozen testicular sperm in Canada. Victor Chow is a fellowship trained sub-specialist in male infertility and advanced microsurgical reconstructive techniques. Dr. William Taylor is a member of our faculty in the community who also cares for the subfertile male.

A complete work-up of the subfertile male is offered, from the initial history and physical examination, to tertiary level investigations such as radiologic investigations, genetic testing and diagnostic procedures. Full service medical and surgical options are offered for patients.

Surgical procedures provided include microsurgical varicocelectomies, transurethral resections, electroejaculation and microscopic vasovasostomies/vasoepididymostomies for vasectomy reversals or congenital obstruction. Surgical sperm retrieval techniques are comprised of epididymal sperm aspiration (microsurgical and percutaneous), testicular extraction and testicular microdissection.

We work closely with our Gynecologic Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility (REI) colleagues at the Genesis Fertility Centre, UBC Centre for Reproductive Health, and the Pacific Centre for Reproductive Medicine to evaluate infertile couples and to help plan around assisted reproductive techniques such as In-Vitro Fertilization/Intracytoplasic Sperm Injection (IVF/ICSI).

There is active ongoing research within the department itself as well as in conjunction with the UBC Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology.
