Sergey Kens

Sergey Kens was born in Russia and came to Canada as an international student. He began his academic journey studying Environmental Technology at Niagara College and worked as an analyst before moving to Saskatchewan to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Anatomy and Cell Biology. He stayed in Saskatchewan to pursue his MD, where he discovered urology. During medical school, Sergey loved shadowing community urologists and was drawn to the specialty’s blend of unique patient connection and technological innovation. The idea of improving patients’ quality of life through innovative technology inspired Sergey to complete a research project with Dr. Kunal Jana on the use of Irreversible Electroporation for treating kidney cancer. Sergey’s passion for improving urologic care also led him to work with Dr. Garson Chan on assessing the safety of transitioning prosthetic urologic surgeries to same-day discharge protocols. Sergey is deeply grateful and excited to continue his training at UBC and to join its world-class urology team. Outside the hospital, he enjoys snowboarding, challenging hikes, hitting the gym, and spending time with his partner and dog.
