Pediatric Urology Fellowship Description

The Division of Pediatric Urology, UBC Department of Urologic Sciences, offers a two-year fellowship in pediatric urology at British Columbia Children’s Hospital.  BC Children’s Hospital is the only tertiary pediatric center in the Province of British Columbia serving a population of 4.7 million. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with four fellowship trained pediatric urologists who perform over 600 surgeries per year and see 5000 patients annually in the outpatient clinics. The fellowship program encompasses training in all aspects of pediatric urological surgeries including complex urinary reconstruction, renal transplant, MIS, and robotics. Outpatient urology and multidisciplinary clinics ensure high levels of exposure to a wide range of pathologies such as disorders of sexual differentiation and neurogenic bladder. First year of fellowship include mandatory clinical research involvement.

 

The first year of fellowship is mainly dedicated to basic science or clinical research.  Basic science research will be supported by state-of-the-art laboratory at Vancouver Prostate Center, Department of Urologic Sciences. Clinical research can be integrated into different master’s Programs offered by The University of British Columbia such as master’s in clinical Epidemiology, Health Administration or Business Administration. Clinical research is supported by a full-time research coordinator, as well as BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute. The first-year fellow will have clinical duties and exposure including OR, clinic and calls.

The second year is focused on clinical training with gradual increase in patient care responsibility.

UBC has a fully accredited Urology Residency Program. Pediatric Urology Fellows will be expected to share clinical duties with and participate in teaching of UBC Urology residents and undergraduate medical students.
